About Patiala

Patiala is fast emerging as an important industrial growth centre on the industrial map of the state. Besides traditional goods, high quality and sophisticated items are now produced including small cutting tools, power cables, Vanaspati ghee, bicycles and agriculture implements including harvester combines and threshers, milk products, pesticides etc. The industrial units are scattered all over the district mainly at Rajpura, Dera bassi, Patiala, Samana and Nabha. There are large and medium industrial units located at Rajpura producing Vanaspati ghee, power cables, bicycles and bicycle components and at Dera bassi producing spun-yarn and alcohol. Among the small scale industry in the district are those producing agriculture implements, rice shellers, cutting tools, electrical goods and bakeries. There are Industrial Focal Points at Patiala, Rajpura, Nabha and Dera bassi and three Industrial Estates at Rajpura, Patiala and banur.

The city has also emerged as an ‘educational hub’ of Punjab as a number of technical institutes of repute are located here. These institutes impart education for the degree program in Engineering, Master of Computer Applications and others.

About Patiala Urban Development Authority

The Government of Punjab constituted a special authority in the name of Patiala Urban Planning and Development Authority (PDA) on 3.5.2002, which acts as an independent vehicle for the development of the area falling in and around the Patiala city. The authority is the regulatory body for all developmental regulations of Patiala.

IT and ITES

The Indian information technology sector has been instrumental in driving the nation's economy onto the rapid growth curve. According to the Nasscom-Deloitte study, the IT/ITES industry's contribution to the country's GDP has increased to a share of 5.2 per cent in 2007, as against 1.2 per cent in 1998.

Further, the IT and BPO industries are poised to clock revenues worth US$ 64 billion by the end of fiscal year 2008, registering a growth of 33 per cent with exports expected to cross US$ 40 billion and the domestic market estimated to clock over US$ 23 billion, according to a study. Simultaneously, the Indian IT services market is estimated to remain the fastest growing in the Asia Pacific region with a CAGR of 18.6 per cent, as per a study by Springboard Research.

Also , the Indian Information Technology enabled Services (ITeS), which started with basic data entry tasks over a decade ago, is witnessing an expansion in its scope of services to include increasingly complex processes involving rule-based decision making and even research services requiring informed individual judgment. It now offers services such as knowledge process outsourcing (KPO), legal process outsourcing (LPO), games process outsourcing (GPO) and design outsourcing among others.

India has emerged as a leader in this sector. As more work has seen off shoring to India, the need of qualified manpower requirement has also increased considerably. Such availability has seen migration from metros to Tier – II cities which have recently developed as ‘educational hubs’ and Patiala being one of them, boasts of numerous engineering colleges with an average count of 2000 graduates passing out from these technical institutes. A trend of setting up delivery center in such cities has also gained momentum.

Bio- Technology

The biotech sector in India is among the fast growing knowledge based sectors with India emerging as a biotechnology hub in the recent times.

The Indian biotech industry – accounting for 2 per cent of the global biotech market – has the potential to develop as a key player, generating revenues worth US$ 5 billion. The domestic biotechnology industry is now a US$ 3 billion sector, registering 30 per cent growth in 2007-08 over the previous year. Furthermore, it is estimated that this sector will grow to occupy 140 million square feet by 2010, creating employment for a million by means of its products as well as its services. Significantly, an Ernst and Young survey recognizes India as one of the emerging biotech leaders, ranked third in the Asia-Pacific region based on the number of biotech companies in the country.

The Indian biotechnology sector - with its 'low cost, high value' proposition - has been growing at 35 per cent to 40 per cent annually for the last three years with over 340 companies. The domestic biotechnology industry, with growth rate of 30 per cent in 2007-08 over 2006-07, has grown to become a US$ 3 billion industry.

Not surprisingly, this sector has been witnessing heightened activity, having already attracted as many as 200 multinationals.

Some Indian companies have succeeded not only in innovating – leading them to grow faster while giving people longer, healthier lives – but also in making healthcare more affordable to people who most need it.
