Prayagraj, earlier known as Allahabad, is a city filled with spirituality and divinity. People come over from all over the world to experience this ambience. Located at the confluence – or Sangam – of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, it is one of the oldest cities in India. The city was an active spot for political activity concerning India’s freedom struggle. Indian National Congress held its session here in 1888.
Prayagraj’s Sangam is a major tourist attraction and is a holy site. It is believed that one’s sins are washed away if a dip is taken in the holy water at the confluence. The spot is beautiful and overwhelming. The Ganges meets the Yamuna here at Pryagraj. The Saraswati is believed to be flowing underground. At some point close to the middle of the river, priests perch on small platforms to perform puja and rituals.
During Maha Kumbh, Sangam truly comes alive. It is during this religious festivity when thousands of devotees from different countries as well as from all over India, come to Prayagraj. The city hosts the largest religious gathering in the world.
While Triveni Sangam is the main attraction, Prayagraj is also known for several other points of faith. The All Saints Cathedral is one of them. Prayagraj is well connected by trains, flights and roads. From Varanasi, it takes around three and a half hours to reach the city. Similarly, there are other cities well-connected to Prayagraj. This encourages travellers to visit the city.
Still remembered as Allahabad, the city boasts of a rich literary and artistic heritage. Tourists throng the city for its historical, cultural and religious spots. Alfred Park, Thornhill Mayne memorial, Allahabad Fort, Ashoka Pillar, Minto Park and Khusro Bagh are among the important historical sites in the city.
